Discover how a small desert settlement became one of Arizona's cherished historic downtowns. This 3-part lecture series explores Glendale's origins from its founding, growth through the mid-20th century, and cultural changes into present day. Each session highlights the evolution of Downtown Glendale as the heart of a community, featuring historic photographs, to help participants gain a deeper understanding of the people, places and events that shaped Downtown Glendale. Audience is invited to share personal historic photographs, documents and stories and the end of the series.
Part 1: Building a Town in the Desert (1890–1930)
How did Glendale begin? This session explores the role of irrigation, land development, and early settlers in transforming desert land into a thriving community. Learn about founder William John Murphy, the arrival of the railroad, and the early development of what would become Downtown Glendale.
Join us for one session or all three to connect with Glendale’s past and see how it continues to shape the future.
